Environmental Benefits

Earth's climate is changing more quickly than most thought possible just a few years ago. Many of the key natural resources upon which we rely are running out. Air and water pollution caused by burning fossil fuels and greenhouse gas emissions are jeopardizing wildlife habitats, our food chain and human health. The good news is we have a choice. By choosing energy solutions that tap natural, clean, abundant resources like the wind, we will stop polluting the air and water and increase our national energy security.

The time for wind power is now. Vermont Community Wind is excited about working with local communities to improve the health of our environment, the local economy and the quality of life for residents, towns and the state.

Here’s how Vermont Community Wind will help the environment by providing clean, renewable energy.

Creating power without greenhouse emissions
Power produced from Wind is clean and does not release greenhouse gases or other pollutants such as those from fossil fuels, such as coal and oil. Wind Power = Zero Emissions.

“In 2008, with over 8,500 megawatts (MW) installed, wind power provided 42% of all the new generating capacity added in the U.S., according to initial estimates, up from less than 2% of new capacity added in 2004. The fact that wind power is now mainstream is good news for our economy, our environment, and our energy security."

Preserving Land
Vermont Community Wind Farm and local property owners have the opportunity to create a symbiotic relationship based on mutual respect and prosperity. Building a Wind Farm allows a property owner to maintain the current use of his/her land while benefiting financially and contributing to a cleaner environment.

Keeping the air and water clean
We all need clean air and water to survive. Wind Energy is empowering because it will generate electricity without polluting our air and water. Wind Energy can power our homes including all the modern conveniences and at the same time allow us to be good stewards of the earth – now and for future generations to come.

Reducing Risks and Improving Health
Wind Power generation in Rutland County will reduce the amount of fossil fuel burned to provide us with electricity, hence reducing the amount of emissions. In addition to greenhouse gasses, fossil fuel emissions include heavy metals such as Mercury, particulates, acids and the chemical precursors of smog. As pollution decreases, heavy metals that enter the water ways and contribute to toxic fish are reduced as are days of "Air Quality Alerts" for smog. Reducing these emissions leads to a healthier planet and healthier people.
